Church Youth Program

I am excited about the new youth program from the church even though I don't have a youth or a calling to teach the youth right now. I am studying using the program already. The program is called "Come Follow Me" and more info can be found on the church web site. If I were teaching, I would provide thoughts for them to think about and space to respond by writing or drawing. I started out using the composition book as a base, art journal style, but think that a regular 3 ring binder allows more flexibility. Now I need to buy/make the 12 cover/tabed pages. In the meantime, I have the first 2 pages of The Godhead done (January's topic). Print these out, punch holes and let them study. At the end of the year- they will have a treasure of talk topics.
I will add more pages as I continue my study, maybe some more next year.
If you are looking for something to decorate the walls, see LDS Handouts and more hidden among my pins on my pintrest religion board.

LDS Christmas Blog Train

It has been a while since I joined a blog train.
Join me in celebrating Christmas Blessing. Here is the quote ""...we do not need a Christmas holiday or Christmas traditions to remember Jesus Christ, our Savior. But the celebrations of Christmas can help remind us of Him. The hallowed Christmas season can be an opportunity to recommit to keep the fire of the Spirit and the glory of the Son of God burning in our hearts every day throughout the year." (I'll get the source when I am more awake.

Aug calendar

The end of last month left me in the dust so this month is starting late and it also sure to be busy (gotta drop some of my FB games ;)

I am adding to an old contest kit and getting it ready for sale. I think the soft colors are a summery combination. I will be featured designer soon and have 2 sampler kits ready from this kit. But today, here is your August clipboard calendar (look for the blue box down the page a bit.

Pintrest

My pintrest page: http://pinterest.com/katlen124/

Just a report on a few items that I pinned:

Watermelon Water: freeze cubes of watermelon, use as ice. I really liked it. Didn't last too long in the freezer.

Bleach Pins on colored shirts: not working for me ... starting to get some lightening after the 3rd try.
Am I supposed to wash the shirts first? How long ... I left it on until it dried. Trying the spray bottle next.

brownie variation: I used mixes and put the brownie batter on the bottom, then some chocolate chip cookie dough into a muffin tin. The things crumbled trying to take them out: FAIL.

I am sitting 11 and 9 year-old boys. They think most of the stuff I saved in my crafts/activities for kids category is "borrrrrring" - they did enjoy the Popsicle stick catapults.

Review Walgreens

Got a coupon for Walgreens Brag Book and decided to try it out. I was all the way through before I figured out how to change the layout on the pages, but then I also saw how to change the cover and design in the same column.

Some easy editing like zoom, nudge and brightness. Lots of auto features like find the focus of the photo and crop to size of placeholder on page. I ordered 2 copies and the coupon took for both.Took me about an hour to upload, place the pictures and orderHard copy should be at my house in 2 weeks. - I'll tell you about the quality of the paper, binding etc. then.

Tablet Cover

So I finally took one of my Pinterest's pins to the finish line.

I have a tablet of unusual size - 8 in (side note: for my girlie hands 8 in is too big to hold in one hand). So I have been pinning several ideas and checking out everyone's case. While I was subbing, I saw a very cool duct tape one and decided to try it.

Materials:
corrugated cardboard cut to size (hint: cut at least 1/2 inch bigger or more for pen/stylus holder)
funky colored duct tape

yep: that's it.

steps:
* Cut cardboard - I cut mine slightly larger - be generous and more
* cut 2 8 inch piece of duct tape in half length wise then fold and trim
bend in loose loop and tape to each of the 4 corners,
     testing along the way

* place a bit of duct tape through each loop and
cut a bit to allow the loops to be free
ie: snip the tape a little and press down in front and behind.

* tape hinge: mine turned out too tight - so again be a bit generous
Hint: I taped the 2 sides first - do it after the corners are secured
cover both ends with tape on all 4 corners.

* Cover the center of each side with tape

* Cover all the edges with tape.

Review and things to change:
Not bad and very sturdy for the cost of 2 rolls of decorative duct tape.
Need some kind of latch, probably duck tape and velcro
right now, I have nothing toward the screen - maybe a soft cloth taped there?
The corners are a bit hard to get the tablet in and out of ... the elastic in the store ones, velcro on one side ... hmm

Next steps:
I have a pair of shorts that are beyond repair, but have a super cute pocket ... let's see what I can do with them.
I'd like to make one that stands or one with a hand strap

Top Ten

Had to put these somewhere ... what skills do they need?

The top ten 21st century skills taught in US Schools

  1. Sitting still at a desk while someone in the front of the room lectures
  2. Preparing for standardized tests
  3. Changing what you are doing every 50 minutes, no matter whether you’d actually finished in 10 minutes or whether you needed more time
  4. Writing five-paragraph essays incorporating highly scored words such as “paradoxically”, “nonplussed”, and “notwithstanding” while filling nearly all the allocated space
  5. Answering even numbered questions (because those are the ones that don’t have the answers printed in the back of the book)
  6. Focusing time and effort solely on activities that will be graded, along with the related skill of sticking to a rubric when completing assignments, and being careful not to go beyond the rubric
  7. Eschewing tools, technologies, and resources that could reduce time and effort or improve the end result because that would be cheating
  8. Forming learning and work groups only with others of the same age, because age is the most important attribute for what a person can and should do
  9. Knowing and accepting your place, because your teacher’s and society’s evaluation of your worth as a person is reflected in your grades and test scores
  10. Avoiding the things you like to do, but doing what you are told, because learning and work shouldn’t be fun

My Review of Roku 2 XS Streaming Player

Originally submitted at Roku

Adds an enhanced remote for playing games, plus extra connectivity options.

Happy

4out of 5

Pros: Easy to use, Easy to set up, Wired

Cons: Inconsistent performance

Best Uses: Living room, Primary TV

Describe Yourself: Movie buff, Home entertainment enthusiast, Netflix fan

I waited until the direct wired version was available because our internet is slow. The XS has very few snags in the transmission and fairly quick start times. Great selection of free channels.
